Kaitlyn Murphy knocks out Soquel in Mariners soccer team SCCAL action

Kaitlyn Murphy scored one goal and one assist as Aptos High’s girls’ soccer team defeated Soquel 3-1 in a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game on Thursday.

Soquel’s Lily Montesinos scored a long-range set goal and the teams were stuck at 1-all at half.

Gwen Chapman and Angelique Nunez scored for the Mariners in the second half. Alexa Castaneda finished the game with two assists.

Murphy scored in the fifth minute, Chapman in the 42nd minute and Nunez in the 57th minute.

“We made two costly mistakes in the second half,” said Knights coach Jose Sierra. “Credit Aptos for taking advantage of the opportunity.”

Mariners goalkeepers Alessandra Zuniga and Evelyn Pini split the time and each made three saves.

Aptos (8-3-1, 4-0-0) plays in Port (7-6-2, 1-2-2) on Tuesday at 19:00

Pacific Collegiate 3, Rancho San Juan 1: Rosalyn Bourdow scored in the third and 43rd minutes, and the Cougars won Thursday’s PCAL Mission Division match.

Ciara Pommerenke scored a goal and provided a pair of assists in the 35th minute. Katya Korobov also assisted.

PCS goalkeeper Taylin Whitten-Hannah played for the first 50 minutes, but left the game injured. He made 10 saves and scored a goal in extra time at the end of the first half. Whitten-Hannah was replaced by Bourdow, who made six saves.

PCS (3-5-0, 1-2-0) welcomes Soledad to Soquel High on Monday at 7pm

Aptos 1, Soquel 0: Kaleb Plascencia was head over heels with a 79-minute pass from Andrew Lopez, and the Mariners were knocked out in Thursday’s SCCAL win.

“The team was explosive, making connected passes, crosses and creating a lot of opportunities,” said Mariners coach Roberto Zuniga.

Aptos (8-5, 3-1) plays at Harbor (10-1-2, 5-0-0) at 5pm on Tuesday

Monte Vista Christian 2 at Gonzales 0: Seniors Luke Hollingsworth and Evan Mariscal each scored one goal in Thursday’s Mustangs PCAL Cypress Division win.

MVC takes on Marina in a makeover match at Seaside High on Saturday at 4 PM.

Santa Cruz 60 at San Lorenzo Valley 26: The Cardinals dunked four in the first quarter, helping them lead 23-8, and they didn’t look back in Thursday’s SCCAL draw match of the teams.

The meeting of the teams on January 6 was postponed due to power outages caused by the storm.

Sophomore Kirby Seals played for the Cardinals with the team’s highest 14 points. Ben Dotten had 12 points, 10 rebounds, Aden Cury had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Dede Smith had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Jacob Sanders scored nine points to lead the SLV and Damien Aguilar contributed seven.

At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Santa Cruz (15-3, 4-0) plays at Scotts Valley, and SLV (3-12, 0-5) plays at Harbor.

Stevenson 73 in MVC 41: The Mustangs lost the PCAL Mission Division game on Thursday.

Stevenson on 42, MVC 40: Sophia Tellez scored 11 points in the Mustangs’ narrow loss in the PCAL Mission Division on Thursday. Kayla Rader scored eight points.

Emma Hall had 16 points for Stevenson and Sydney Clymo 13 points.

MVC welcomes Monterey on Monday at 7 PM.

UC Santa Cruz 3 at Cal Lutheran 1: Banana Slugs at the NCAA III.

Veteran outfielder Colton Jeffrey, a Santa Cruz graduate, had 18 kills and six pickaxes. A freshman opposite Noy Fisher killed 12 and senior middle blocker/counter Zachary Thompson killed nine.

Junior setter Mohan Duvvuri had 23 assists and Santa Cruz’s first-class setter Leo Tuncer had 15 assists.

Senior libero/outside spiker Maxwell Mednick had six assists and three digs. Junior midfielder Colby Hurdle had five blocks and three aces.

Ben Weber led the Kingsmen (1-2) with 15 kills, four gooses, two assists and two aces.

The UCSC Slug Slam takes place on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Banana Slugs (1-0) host North Park at 8:30 am at Kaiser Permanente Arena and pit Cal Lutheran against Illinois Wesleyan at 10:45.

The rest of the opening day action moves to West Field House, where UCSC hosts Edgewood at 1 p.m.

Fontbonne will face North Park at 3:15 PM, Cal Lutheran face Edgewood at 5:30 PM, and Fontbonne face Illinois Wesleyan at 7:45 PM.

Fresno Pacific 80 at UCSC 45: Eric DeBrine had eight points and eight rebounds as the Banana Slugs lost to the NCAA D-II Sunbirds at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Thursday night.

Darrin Person and Kyle Monk each recorded 15 issues for the Sunbirds (5-12).

UCSC faces off against Colorado College (7-9) in Colorado Springs on Saturday afternoon.
